Liz Nielsen is an experimental photographer working in the traditional analog color darkroom. She uses handmade negatives, layering techniques, and a variety of light sources. Each of her images is unique and cannot be duplicated. Her current work is themed around mirrored landscapes and embodies both representation and abstraction. Liz has had recent solo exhibitions in New York, London, Budapest, and Paris. Her work has been reviewed in the New Yorker, the London Financial Times, LensCulture, Vogue UK, FOAM magazine, and most recently in the Guardian.


What was your latest book discovery? What are your favorite books of all time?

Right now I'm reading How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan, but I just read Manahattan Beach by Jennifer Egan which was awesome. And fave books of all time....sheesh. I'm just going to present books that I've read lately and liked a lot. I loved reading the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, Just Kids by Patti Smith, Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, The Outliers by Malcome Gladwell, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit, American Kingpin by Nick Bilton, Artemis by Andy Weir, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay, and I'll be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara.

What apps do you use the most and why?

Ha. I'm awful with directions so GOOGLE MAPS. :)
Instagram to look at art/artists
Giphy to connect with my family/friends in a relational way
New Yorker Crossword Puzzles because it is my secret pleasure
Radiolab, it is my fave NPR show
Camera/Photos app, I'm a photographer so I record everything!
Sky Guide. I'm into space and watching the space station fly by fills me with energy.

What are some of your tv top tips right now?

I just finished and was very hooked on: The OA and Maniac. I highly recommend these two but I don't watch too much TV.

What tools do you use in your work?

Total darkness and also any kind of light, anything transparent, scissors, utility blades, photo darkroom paper (my favorite is FujiFilm FujiFlex), and also I document my analog work with a digital camera, then Photoshop, and then artwork archive.
