Rose Eken is a Danish sculptor best known for her vast installations in ceramic. Eken builds a world of works that are both recognizable but never a 1:1 portrayal as she twists and turns scale and proportions of the objects she works from. Her method of working and her large-scale installations assume an anthropological quality, documenting and preserving the relics of a culture and celebrating a history in process.
Eken has exhibited extensively in galleries and museums internationally - for example received great praise for her solo exhibition ’In Residence – Rose Eken’ at MOCA Tucson, AZ and her solo show ’Afterbeat’ at Horsens Kunstmuseum in Denmark (2018). Eken is represented by V1 Gallery in Copenhagen.
What was your latest book discovery? What are your favorite books of all time?
I am currently reading Where There's Love, There's Hate by Aldolfo Bioy Casares and Silvina Ocampo.
It's hard to say what my favourite books are of all time, but one is definitely another Bio Casares book called The Invention of Morel. Other books that have shaped me or have stayed with me for very long are Living My Life by Emma Goldman - my mom gave this to me when I turned 16 and started dying my hair and hanging on the punk- scene. She thought I should understand properly the history of Anarchism. - bless!
Another book I love is The Invention of Solitude by Paul Auster ( or say pretty much everything he has written), Fictions by Borges and Invisible Cities by Iltalo Calvino are also books I keep returning to. But also I’m a huge fan of fantasy novels - my oldest sister Cecilie Eken is an fantasy writer, I am of course her biggest fan. Her latest Sci-Fi-fi/fantasy trilogy karanagalaksen is incredible! - and Tolkien and Ursula K. Le Guin was much read and loved in our childhood ( still is).
Most visited blogs, websites? :
Gosh - that is a good question.... I’m not much of a blog reader really.... mostly I do obscure research that take me to nerdy music fan sites or things like that. I do a lot of crazy image searches too - but not sure I have a favorite.
What apps do you use the most and why?
I guess that would be my Gmail (work work work) and my Instagram.
Probably Facebook too - though I mostly just use Facebook to stay connected to people and checking on events and stuff. I do love Instagram. I’m a visual person so it’s fun to go exploring other artist works and actually I’ve made quite a few friends world wide this way too.
Whats currently on your playlist?
Kiss / Scout Niblett / Bonnie Prince Billie - is a favorite of mine too or Poms Poms by Scout Niblett
Rid of Me by PJ Harvey
Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby by Cigarettes after Sex
Where is My Mind? by Pixies
Star Roving by Slowdive
Sweet Expectations or Future Plan by Speaker Bite Me
Sugar Kane by Sonic Youth
Bad Guy by Billie Eilish
Lean On by MØ has to be on the list two - being danish it’s hard not to be seriously proud of everything she has achieved. And she is the sweetest person too :D
Search and Destroy or Raw Power by Iggy Pop ( or anything really)
I also listen to a lot of Metal
say Master of Puppets by Metallica
Paranoid by Black Sabbath ( was actually the first vinyl I ever bought when I was 11 years old)
the danish Black Metal band: In the Eye of the Devil by Slægt
I could keep on ....
What records would you recommend to hear?
Slowdive By Slowdive
Future Plans by Speaker Bite Me
This Fool Can Die Now by Scout Niblett
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go by Billie Eilish
Post Pop Depression by Iggy Pop
Paranoid by Black Sabbath
and many more
Fresh movie finds? What films do you think everybody should watch?
A film I recently rewatched which I think is really great Arrival.
But also everyone should watch my friend Lasse Lau's award winning documentary Lykkelænder (The Raven and the Seagull in english). It is about the (problematic) relation between Greenland and Denmark.
Which artists working today do you admire most?
AH - THAT is the most difficult question - there are SO many!!
I love David Shrigly, I love Tal R, I love Jockum Nordstrom and Klara Kristalova's work - I love my friends Emma Kohlmann and John Copeland and Richard Coleman's work so much too. The young danish ceramicist Klara Lilja is also on the list.
I fail to mention a billion - I know.
What are some of your tv top tips right now?
Who are you following?
What tools do you use in your work?
Weird wooden sticks my brother in law's dad have carved in his basement. But also just a lot of very classic ceramic stuff.
I’m pretty analogue all around - still use a light table to draw up stuff rather than doing it in photoshop... But I do love my mac too....
Not sure - whatever seems right... depending on what I’m making....
What magazines / newspapers do you read regularly?
What are your favorite gadgets?
Shoes - I LOVE shoes! All kinds - heels, boots, trainers, sandals, pumps.... it’s kinna an addiction I guess (not so good).
One of my favorite pair of heels ( like I should have bought two pairs) is a pair of silver and black pumps from Miu Miu - they look like something Runaways would have worn or perhaps Kiss if they were wearing heels.
Jewelry is a thing too. My (other) sister Michala Eken makes jewelry - so I obviously wear a lot of her stuff. Also for the past 15 years or so I have been wearing these bracelets that my friend Julie Linke Bank makes - they are made from nuts and look somewhere between a diamond and rivet bracelet.
